Questions about making cocktails at home
Quick answers to common questions. Can’t see yours? Contact us and we’ll help.
What are the easiest cocktails to make at home?
Drinks you build straight in the glass are the easiest, because you don’t need a shaker or a strainer. A gin and tonic, a Moscow Mule or a Skindy (champagne and sloe gin) each take about two minutes.
What equipment do I need to make cocktails at home?
A cocktail shaker, a jigger for measuring, a bar spoon and a Hawthorne strainer cover almost every recipe on ThatCocktail. Add a highball glass and a cocktail glass and you’re set. Our cocktail equipment recommendations and glassware guide list the kit we rate.
Can I make a cocktail without a shaker?
Yes. A clean jam jar with a tight lid works well. Add ice and your ingredients, screw the lid on and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds, then strain into your glass through a small sieve. Highballs like the Southern Senorita are stirred in the glass, so they don’t need shaking at all.
What does “1 part” mean in a cocktail recipe?
A part is a ratio rather than a fixed amount. Choose one measure and use it for every part: if 1 part is 30ml, then 2 parts is 60ml. That’s why our recipes list ml, oz and parts, so you can scale a drink up for a jug or down for a smaller glass.
Which spirits should I buy first for a home bar?
Start with a spirit you already enjoy drinking. Between them, vodka, gin, white rum and tequila cover most popular cocktails, and a bottle of triple sec adds dozens more. Our alcohol recommendations list the brands we rate.
Do you have non-alcoholic cocktail recipes?
Yes. Our non-alcoholic cocktails collection has booze-free drinks for designated drivers and dry nights in, including a Pornstar Martini mocktail that keeps the passion fruit flavour of the original.
