The Ocean Drive Cocktail is summer.
The ingredients, the presentation, the vibe…it’s all summer.
Think of a Carribean Beach. You’re lying on a sunbed, wondering whether to got for a tip in the glistening blue-green sea. But first you need a drink. You reach for a cocktail with the most summer vibes.
It’s an Ocean Drive.
What Ingredients do you need to make an Ocean Drive?
An Ocean Drive contains 5 main ingredients:
Let’s take a look at those ingredients in a little more detail…
Malibu
Malibu is a coconut-flavoured rum liqueur with an alcoholic volume of 21%.
Malibu is made from Coconut, fruits, and spices and interestingly, was originally created to make it easier for bartenders to make the ever-popular Pina Colada.
Blue Curaçao
Blue Curaçao is a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit, which is then artificially coloured blue for effect.
It’s a great ingredient to use in cocktails because it pretty much has everything you could ever want as a cocktail mixer:
- It has an enticing colour.
- It has a bitter orange taste that blends well with most flavours.
- It has a great amount of alcohol in it.

What Equipment do you need?
To make the Ocean Drive cocktail, it’s useful to have the following equipment.
Cocktail Shaker
Cocktail shakers improve the taste of cocktails. It’s a fact.
There’s a reason that famed British spy James Bond says “shaken, not stirred”. And that reason is: because it tastes better.
If you don’t already have a cocktail shaker set, you might want to check out our detailed Cocktail Shaker comparison article.
But to cut a long story short, here’s the cocktail shaker we recommend:
Jigger
It’s important to get the mix of any cocktail right. The measurements are set for a reason – to specify a tried, tested, and tasty drink.
A jigger is going to help you get those perfect measurements – after all, it is what the pro’s use.
For a jigger, we recommend:
Hawthorne Strainer
If you (or perhaps the person you’re buying for) don’t have a Hawthorne strainer as part of a cocktail shaker set, it’s a great, and incredibly useful, cocktail gift you need in your cocktail toolbox.
The strainer is typically used to remove the ice (or any other unwanted solid ingredients) from your cocktail as it’s poured from the cocktail shaker into your glass.
For a Hawthorne Strainer, we recommend:
Cocktail Glass
This cocktail recipe tastes great, but let’s make it look great too.
Having the right glass for the right cocktail always makes the experience more enjoyable in my experience.
And the right glass is a cocktail glass.
